Why I Became a Financial Advisor

People often ask me why I entered this industry and became a financial advisor. Like many people, I didn’t grow up knowing what I wanted to be or what I wanted to do with my career. What I did know is that I enjoyed working with numbers and liked the idea of working with people and helping them solve their problems.

I initially thought I’d go into business or accounting. While studying accounting at Southeastern Louisiana University, I started taking finance classes along with my accounting classes. The finance and economics classes made a lot more sense to me than the accounting ones, and I found myself more and more intrigued with economics and the science and strategies behind finance. I switched my major from accounting to finance almost immediately.

Getting Started

One day in between classes, one of my professors told me about an open internship available at Merrill Lynch. As I had enjoyed an investment class I’d taken, I jumped at the opportunity. Shortly after, I started my internship and kick-started my career in finance.

I learned a lot during my internship with Merrill Lynch, and when I graduated in December of 1999, I was accepted into their Professional Development Program (PDP). Here, I had the opportunity to earn my licenses and start my career as a financial advisor. After a couple of years working with Merrill Lynch, I worked as an advisor with Hibernia National Bank in Slidell for several years and Parish National Investment Services, and four years after that, joined Benchmark Investment Group as an Investment Executive.

Making a Change

These opportunities all provided me with unique experiences. But as much as I enjoyed the work I did, I knew I wanted a career that allowed me to work more closely with families and help them with their financial concerns. As I was closely tied to my community of Slidell, I recognized a growing demand for customized attention and personalized financial solutions. With the goal of solving this need, I founded Harbor Wealth Management in 2015.

In creating Harbor Wealth Management, my mission was to build a small, independent firm that was dedicated to providing the highest level of customer service to individuals and families. I seek to develop and maintain long-term relationships with clients through the focus of investment management, retirement and financial planning, estate and legacy planning, and income planning. My commitment is to provide customized financial solutions that meet you and your family’s needs.

The Triumphs and the Hurdles

As much as I enjoy being an advisor, there are plenty of challenges I overcome. It can be time-consuming to run a business and work one-on-one with clients, and with an equally busy wife who works and two young kids at home, it’s hard to find time to build my business.

While it can be quite a juggling act balancing my role as the founder of Harbor Wealth Management and as an advisor to many clients, I can’t imagine having any other career. There’s nothing more rewarding than helping new clients realize that we are committed to providing a higher level of service than they’ve experienced anywhere else. It’s very fulfilling to know that I am helping people with their finances, and I enjoy meeting so many different people. When your clients become your friends, working as an advisor becomes much more than just a job; it feels more like a calling.

I am always open to meet new people and see how I may be able to help. Whether you’ve already started planning for the future or have yet to put strategies in place, I encourage you to reach out to me today for a no-obligation conversation to see how I may be able to help you.
